As real estate professionals, we are often asked the question, “What is Dothan’s main industry?” I often like to shoot back, “There isn’t one”, just to see what their reaction will be. The truth is that there actually isn’t one industry that drives the economy of the Dothan area. And that is a good thing! Here are three facts about the our local economy that you might not know.

1- No industry group accounts for more than 21% of the workforce in southeast Alabama, including Dothan. The health and education industries employ 21% of the local workforce, manufacturing employs 21%, and 17% of our workforce is employed in the trade industry.

2- Reflecting the importance of Dothan as the “Hub of the Wiregrass”, the Leisure and Hospitality industry is the fourth largest industry, employing 9% of the total workforce.

3- Construction, finance, and real estate are big employers in southeast Alabama, accounting for 8% of the workforce.

The diverse Dothan economy is one reason we are somewhat sheltered from the slowdown in home sales prevalent across the country. A diverse economy can weather the ups and downs that happen within specific industries. Local economies that rely heavily on one or two industries will suffer when those industries experience a slow down, but with the variety of industries that drive the Dothan area economy, a slump in one or two will not have the same overall effect.

Because Dothan is the largest city within about 75 miles, we serve as the hub of activity for a wide radius. People within a large area come to Dothan for medical care, shopping and dining out, and leisure activities. It is this influx of people on a daily basis that drives the Dothan economy.
