One of the reasons many relocating Floridians are drawn to our area is the close proximity to the coast. Dothan is located around a hundred miles for Panama City Beach. While we are close enough to be able to enjoy the sand and surf with a short drive, we are far enough inland that we usually don’t feel the full effects of a hurricane striking the Florida Panhandle. There are exceptions of course, so preparation is key.
What does the Dothan area typically experience? Thunderstorms with lightning and some tornadoes are a threat, but this area of the country can have these year round. Heavy rain accompanied by wind can cause tree limbs and even trees to topple, meaning power outages are fairly common when a hurricane makes a close pass. The biggest hits the Dothan area has taken from passing hurricanes has lead to power outages that can last several days. The problems associated with trees and limbs being down and prolonged power outages are in most cases the biggest problems caused by a hurricane visiting southeast Alabama.
All that being said, it is always best to prepare for the worst. What do you need to do to prepare for hurricane season? The National Hurricane Center, in addition to the best place to track storms, has some of the best tips for hurricane preparation. The Red Cross also has some good information.

Texas also has the problem of hurricanes but it seems not nearly as much as Florida.
