August 27th, 2008 - Categories: Dothan area information, Fort Rucker
More and more Fort Rucker soldiers are choosing to live in Dothan, simply because Dothan offers more recreational opportunities, health care facilities, and school choices than any other community near the base. The restaurant choices and retail shopping opportunities in Dothan draw tens of thousands of people to Dothan each week as well.
U.S. Highway 84 is the main corridor from Dothan to the Fort Rucker post, and it is a quick 20 minute trip from the west side of town to the gate.
Dothan is home to many retired military folks that chose to either stay here upon retirement or moved back to Dothan because they liked it so much when they were stationed at Fort Rucker. They discovered the easy lifestyle, the reasonable cost of living, and all the other intangibles that enhance the quality of life here.
Getting in and out of southeast Alabama is easily accomplished through the Dothan Regional Airport. Whether it is travel for TDY, or back to Hometown, USA to visit family, a quick flight to Atlanta will connect you with any worldwide destination.

February 22nd, 2008 - Categories: Dothan area information, Fort Rucker, Seniors and Retirement
Many of us here in Dothan do not fully realize the economic impact that Fort Rucker, the Home of Army Aviation, has on our area. Military personnel, Department of Defense civilians, and contract civilian employees all put money into our economy from their paychecks, and there are also contracts for various services on and off base that figure in.
Here is a brief overview of the some of the numbers.
On any given day, more than 300 flying classrooms (aircraft) take to the skies in and around Fort Rucker. Those aircraft operate in an area from Montgomery, Alabama to the north to Panama City, Florida to the south, and from Albany, Georgia to the east to Evergreen, Alabama to the west.
It is estimated that Fort Rucker lends support to close to 15,000 military retirees in southeast Alabama. These retirees, as well as military personnel and employed civilians, shop in area stores, eat in area restaurants, and pay property and sales taxes.
Around sixty foreign countries have sent students to Fort Rucker for aviation training.
The next time you hear the helicopters, or when you see a man or woman in uniform out and about, be thankful for what Fort Rucker means to our community.

January 16th, 2008 - Categories: Historic Markers around Dothan, Just for Fun
Ashford, Alabama has an interesting history that grew out of the railroad and the turpentine industries in the late 19th century. The Alabama Midland Railroad Depot, built in 1889, still remains a historic centerpiece of this era. Interestingly, the Ashford Depot faced demolition when the Atlantic Coastline Railroad no longer needed it as an active station. The depot was purchased from the railroad by Ashford Gin Company for an undisclosed amount to store ingredients for fertilizer that came by rail. When Ashford Gin Company ceased operations, C. O. Adams, Jr. deeded the depot to the town of Ashford. Local citizens, under the direction of former station master Tommy Rod Henderson, raised money to give the depot a new roof and paint job in the early 1980’s. The present historic marker was placed on September 12, 1985 and the nearly 100 year old depot was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Nothing further was done to preserve the structure of the depot until 2001, when Mayor Bryan Alloway appointed new members to the Depot committee to seek grants for a complete restoration. The dream became reality thanks to support from the community and government officials from the local, state, and federal levels. The Ashford Depot dedication took place on November 11, 2005. The recently restored Victorian style building houses a beautiful community room equipped for catering, with tables and chairs to accomodate 60 - 80 people. Presently the restored community freight area and dock is used for business meetings, receptions, reunions, etc.
The railroad museum is a work in progress. This part of the historic depot is projected to open this year for exhibits, classroom orientation, and field trips. The caboose and railcar are considered part of the museum and plans are to restore the caboose to depict its usage by freight crews during the peak of railroading.
The Ashford Area Economic Development and Historical Preservation Foundation is working with the Historic Chattahoochee Commission and the Alabama Bureau of Tourism to make visiting the Ashford Depot a unique experience along the Chattahoochee Trace.
