I’m sure you’ve seen them; the alphabet soup of letters that some real estate agents have after their names. The National Association of REALTORS encourages agents to pursue further education opportunities to better their real estate careers, and for taking these advanced classes we are awarded what is called a designation, which is the letters you see after the name. Successful agents must keep current on industry related issues, evolving technology, changing legalities, and new marketing ideas.
Although other designations exist, only 20 are official NAR designations and certifications. Here is a brief explanation of a few that you will see most often.
GRI stands for Graduate, REALTOR Institute - This one requires a minimum of 90 hours of education covering real estate related topics such as business planning, fair housing, and contracts. If the real estate pre-license class were the equivalent of high school, the GRI designation could be said to be a college degree.
ABR stands for Accredited Buyer Representative - Prepares REALTORS for working with buyer clients in real estate transactions and provide the quality of service and degree of fidelity to buyers that sellers have customarily enjoyed.
CRS stands for Certified Residential Specialist - Content for this designation is centered on high content training in the systems and strategies of residential real estate. Also, a higher level of real estate experience is required to receive this designation.
SRES stands for Senior Real Estate Specialist - Designation for REALTORS that have chosen to earn a greater understanding of the distinct real estate goals, concerns, and needs of seniors.
There are other designations outside of these offered through the National Association of REALTORS, including one I received this last month. The CPS designation, which stands for Competitive Pricing Specialist and is awarded to experienced REALTORS that use the unique comparative market analysis system sold and promoted by XpertCMA.com. Unique because it compares properties on the market today rather than from months ago.
You usually can’t go wrong by seeking out REALTORS that promote this alphabet soup of letters after their name, because they have made a committment to their profession and to furthering their knowledge to better serve buyer and seller clients.

As of last Thursday, 46% of Alabama is under an exceptional drought, which is the most critical level. 99% of the state is experiencing some level of drought, with only the coastal areas escaping the arid conditions. The long range forecast is not predicting any relief anytime soon. So how is the drought effecting the Dothan area water supply? Should Dothan residents be as concerned as some residents in north Alabama and north Georgia? At this point in time, it doesn’t appear that we have to be overly concerned, just ever mindful of our usage.
Water supplied to residents of Dothan and the surrounding Wiregrass area, through the various water systems, is pumped up to the surface from underground aquifers. Because of this fact, it is not readily apparent when our water supply is in decline, and it is easy for us to just assume there is plenty of water. The Stage II water alert that is normally in effect in Dothan from April through October was not extended, so we are only under a voluntary conservation plan right now. Now, when our water supply is not in danger, is the time to practice good conservation however.
As Alabama, Georgia, and Florida battle over who should have control over certain water sources, Dothan residents should continue to conserve water whenever possible. Take a look at this list and pick out at least a couple of things YOU can do to conserve this fall and winter.
Where is the majority of the water in your home going? Toilet 27%, clothes washer 22%, shower 17%, faucets 16%, leaks 14% and other 5%. So you can see more than a quarter of all water is flushed down the drain.
Please post your water conservation tips below. We want an ample water supply for both current and future residents of Dothan. By the way, if you know of someone that is considering moving to the Dothan area, drop me an email.

It is a decision many senior Americans make everyday. Is it time to downsize? As a Senior Real Estate Specialist, I am asked all the time about this subject, and I have seen first-hand the consequences of not planning. Here are three things to consider as you think about your next move.
One of the principal reasons for downsizing is to get rid of stuff you don’t need. You’re not really downsizing if you move into a 1500 square foot house with all the belongs you had in your 2200 square foot house. Have a garage sale, donate items to Goodwill, or get a dumpster. You can watch HGTV for helpful advice on cleaning out your place.
The level of upkeep you will be required to do in your new place is just as important as the size. If you are trying to lessen or even escape yard work, a townhouse or home with a smaller lot will appeal to you. If you plan on being on the road traveling, then you might consider a purchase where routine maintenance and yard word is done for you.
No one likes to think about it, but you need to plan for it. There may be possessions that you want certain family members or friends to have on your passing. It might be best to go ahead and give those at the time of your move. This will help make your move lighter, and give you peace of mind that your wish for a family heirloom has been fulfilled.

Each year the National Association of Realtors?designates September as REALTOR Safety Month. We all should be concerned about safety around our home, not just REALTORS. Here are a few timely reminders to help insure your safety around your home:
1.?? Consider investing in an alarm system. Be sure it has a panic button feature.?
2.?? Install deadbolts on all exterior doors. Most doors without deadbolts can be opened?in less than?ten seconds by a practiced thief.
3.?? Don?t hide keys in the mailbox, around planters, or under doormats. Be original in your hiding place.
4.?? Keep all medications and other valuables, such as jewelry, stored and out of sight. Sometimes its best not to tempt people.
5.?? Don’t open your door to strangers after dark. In fact, in today’s world, it?s probably not safe for you to open the door in daytime to strangers. Ask to see some picture identification. A legitimate solicitor will gladly produce ID. Don?t let strangers into your home, even a REALTOR, if they cannot produce good ID.?
This is only a few of the many suggestions?of the National Association of Realtors. The Dothan Police Department would be good source for more information, or if you feel you need help or suggestions on security for your home or property I will be glad to come and do a safety walk-thru of your property. If your property is currently ?on the market? ask your REALTOR to make suggestions how you can better secure your property.
If you have any good tips related to home security, please leave us a comment below.
