I hope you all were able to catch the 44^th Annual Azalea Dogwood Festival this past weekend. We have spent the last week or so highlighting some of the flowers and trees blooming right now here in Dothan, and the Festival is a great way to see them first hand.

Azalea’s come in many colors, and when they bloom they absolutely cover the bush with flowers. Pink, white, and a light purple are the most common colors. You’ll even see blooming azaleas year round in our header picture above.

The Wisteria Vine?s light purple color can make for a stark contrast to many other plants blooming this time of year. And because it is a vine, it is sometimes hard to tame. The most beautiful of these vines are in places where they are allowed to grow on the side of a building.

I have heard a Spirea bush called a ?snowball bush? because when you see it from a distance that?s what it looks like. The flowers are actually clustered in groups of a dozen or so blooms, and they are as white as snow.

Here?s another of the magnificent blooming trees and bushes you?ll find around Dothan this time of year. It is hard to argue that springtime is the most beautiful time of the year.

The Flowering Peach comes in white (shown below), pink, and red. I?m 99% sure this is a Flowering Peach, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

The Azalea Dogwood Festival marks the annual return of spring to the Dothan area. We have been posting over the past week or so some beautiful pictures of trees and shrubs that are blooming around the area right now. This Sunday, March 30, you can see them first hand by following the 44^th Annual Azalea Dogwood trail.

Ribbon cutting will be at 2:00 pm at the corner of West Main and Woodland Drive. After driving the trail, ?Sunday in the Park? festivities will take place at Solomon Park, including entertainment, free refreshments, and children?s games. Make plans now to attend!

I like to have some fun on hump day. Really should do it every week. If the story wrote itself like this one does, it would be a lot easier.

This jewel comes from Eufaula, Alabama, which is about an hour north of Dothan. Thanks to The Dothan Eagle.

A Thursday afternoon fire at a local restaurant had an interesting origin.
A flaming toilet seat was found in the women’s restroom at Captain D’s on South Eufaula Avenue just after noon.

According to Lt. Will Slade of the Eufaula Fire Department, there was nobody in the restroom at the time of the fire.

According to a report from the Eufaula Fire and Rescue Squad, firefighters were dispatched to the restaurant after receiving a call stating there was a smoke smell in the building.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and found no flames or smoke visible from the outside of the restaurant.

But upon entering the building, they noticed smoke in the hallway leading to the restrooms.

That helped them find the small fire in the restroom.

A fan motor cover from the exhaust fan mounted in the ceiling had apparently burned free from mounting brackets because of an electrical short in the motor, according to the fire department report.

As a result the cover fell on the plastic toilet seat, setting the seat on fire.

Firefighers quickly extinguished the fire, ventilated the structure and checked the attic.

They left the scene by 12:40 p.m.

“We ventilated the structure and everything was fine,” a smiling Slade said Monday.

I know there are some funny lines for this story, but the only thing I can think of at this second is I am glad nobody’s assets were burned.

It was around freezing here in Dothan this morning. I realize that our friends up north are suffering temps below freezing, but to me, 32 degrees Fahrenheit is cold. I?m not a cold weather person, which is one of the many reasons I enjoy living in southeast Alabama.

Amongst all the shades of brown and greenish-brown outside, a sure sign of spring are the beautiful blooms of Magnolia liliiflora, better known around these parts as the Japanese Magnolia.

Take a look as you are driving through your neighborhood over the next few days. And if you are like me, take solace in the fact that the 32 degree weather will soon be gone for eight or nine months.

At the corner of East Main Street and Museum Street in downtown Dothan, there is a small park. Today, it is a gathering place for different events throughout the year, or even a place to enjoy an outdoor lunch. Many years ago, this was the spot where a spring, called Poplar Head Spring, served as a meeting place for Indian traders. Later, this was where the first families settled in what was later to become the city of Dothan.

Across the street is the location of an old mule stable, which for many years in the early 1900’s was one of the largest mule trading posts in the south. The stable was torn down in the 1970’s. I don’t know if you can read it in the picture, but the mule stable was owned by Marvin Holman. I believe, and somebody correct me if I am wrong, that Mr. Holman’s daughter Edith married Max Jones, and for many years they owned and operated Jones Farm Equipment and Auction located at the corner of Montgomery Highway and Ross Clark Circle, where Wiregrass Commons Mall stands today.

Next time you are in downtown Dothan, take a minute to think about the history of our community, and all those people who came before us and helped make Dothan what it is today.
